The Like - Converse Commercial

The Like
What I Say And What I Mean

[Converse Commercial]

We were watching TV the other day and a Converse Commercial came on with a punky sort of backing music track. In the commercial, a girl gets dropped off by a car at private school and then runs up the steps and into the bathroom where she proceeds to secretly change her look (including her hair, tie, makeup and most noticeably her argyle socks).

I’ve got indie radar for music in commercials so I immediately knew this was an indie band, and probably one whose CD I’ve got. We thought it might have been Giant Drag right away and a little searching proved we were on the right track. The band is the fairly well known punkyteen trio The Like, who have played with Giant Drag before.

It turns out that there’s more to it than just a simple commercial. Converse is running a site called Converse Gallery where budding directors can submit Converse-inspired mini film clips. The one in question is by Adria Petty and is called “Secret’.

The song that is used in the commercial is called What I Say And What I Mean and is the second song off of The Like’s album called “Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking”? It has a sound which reminds me of Elastica, especially in the singing (for those of you who remember Elastica!) The film short uses the chorus of the song which includes the line “Never going back and forth, I’m only going forward that’s what I keep saying.”

I’d earlier not paid as much attention to the album even though I received it… I thought they were being hyped just a little too much. But, listening back to it just now I’ve gotta admit that there are some great songs on it.
