Iron and Wine
Such Great Heights
[M&M commercial]
I thought the world was coming to an end when I heard Sam Beam of Iron and Wine cover the Postal Service song “Such Great Heights”. Never mind that it’s an awesome song. I would have much rather him covered a DCFC song any day, but beggars can’t be choosers. The fact that it also appeared on the excellent Garden State soundtrack was pretty cool and I guess it didn’t hurt his publicity.
Well, apparently network executives have glommed onto it (as is their perennial way), because I just heard “Such Great Heights” on TV in the unlikely setting of an M&M’s commercial called “Kaleidoscope”. By now, I expect to see neu folky stuff in transcendental Volkswagon commercials a la Nick Drake but it was sort of strange to associate his voice with candy promotion. Maybe, M&M’s is figuring he’ll be a hero to the kids - the creaky old bearded porch setter that they can gather ’round for “wayback” stories, lemonade and bowls of M&M candy. In that case, look for a Will Oldham track in the next Snickers commercial…
