Ponies In The Surf – Self Titled EP

(cd review)

7.29.05

Ponies In The Surf
Ventricle

[Early Morning Late Night]

Some really lovely folk numbers from brother and sister duo Camille and Alexander McGregor, who are otherwise known as Ponies In The Surf. This is beautiful and uncluttered music with a slight Spanish inflection in the chords.

“Ventricle” is a nearly perfect tune that is intimate and yet expressive with the interchange in their voices. All of their songs feature only a single guitar that plunks along plaintively, almost like a ukelele. It forms the perfect complement to both Alexander’s slightly boozy falsetto and Camille’s sweeter voice that is nearly, but not quite, twee.

They currently have one self titled EP out, and the other two songs available for download are similar in feel. With their songs, I almost always feel like they should be enjoyed while lying on your back while looking up at the clouds on a deserted sunny beach somewhere.

“See You Happy” is forlorn and wistful… you can almost hear the night crickets chirping in the background. I think the timing of their harmonies is really nice and even a bit unusual in how they float in and out. “Government Brand” luxuriates in soft “ba-ba-da-bum”‘s, with Alexander’s voice reaching heights not touched previously.

I think they are supposed to have a new album coming out soon, so I’ll certainly be checking their site for new tracks…
